Glock .380 - In the right hands, the Glock 42 could become as deadly as its big-bore counterpart. The smallest Glock pistol, also for those whose primary buying factor is concealment. While not for everyone, the combination of Glock's pistol platform and John Browning's small automatic calibers is still a compelling option for the flexible and cautious user.

Combining the successful design of the Glock pistol with a caliber invented by gunsmith John Moses Browning, the Glock 42 is definitely worth a look.

The pistol combines the Austrian gun manufacturer's pistol operating system with the .380 ACP pistol cartridge. The result is a pistol designed for the concealed carrier who wants a low-recoil pistol, and the smallest pistol in the Glock line.

Austrian gunmaker Glock took a tree-like approach to its line of pistols, with the original Glock 17 9mm pistol branching off from a trunk in each major caliber. The company typically launches a full-size Glock in a new caliber, then quickly follows up with compact, subcompact, and competition pistols to round out the caliber lineup.

Unlike other branches like the .45 ACP and .40 Smith & Wesson, the .380 ACP branch of the Glock family is the smallest of all branches and consists of a single pistol: the Glock 42. The smallest and least powerful of all calibers it has company approval, the nature of the .380 ACP cartridge makes it suitable only for modern subcompact designs.

The .380 ACP cartridge was invented in 1908 by inventor John Moses Browning. The early 1900s were probably Browning's most prolific and influential period, with the invention of the M1911 pistol, the .50 caliber M2 machine gun, and firearms in .380 ACP and .45 ACP calibers. Although the cartridge had brief success as a pistol cartridge in European armies before World War II, after the war standardization of the larger and more powerful 9mm Parabellum replaced the smaller ammunition in military service, thereby Become a civilian caliber.

The .380 ACP is a subsonic cartridge, with a few individual exceptions. Most iterations range between 75 and 95 particles. The full metal-clad Federal .380 ACP round weighs 95 grains, produces 203 foot-pounds of power at the muzzle, and travels at 980 feet per second. In comparison, the 9mm (.350) Federal FMJ bullet is about the same size, weighs 364 foot-pounds, has more than 60 percent more energy, and fires at 1,150 feet per second.

The advantage of the .380 ACP is not power or speed, it's easier recoil. A .380 pistol should be easier to hit than a 9mm pistol under the same conditions. Hence the tradeoff between the two calibers: accuracy vs. damage. Accuracy, if you put the bullet where you want it, you'll do damage, but damage won't give you accuracy.

Hence the debate over pistols like the Glock 42. While not as powerful as its cousin, the subcompact 9mm Glock 26, the Glock 42 is more manageable. The .380 caliber, while relatively low powered, also has over a century of payload development, up to 294 foot-pounds when using the Buffalo Bore +P cartridge.

The Glock 42 is the smallest pistol in the Glock line, with an overall length of 5.94 inches. The G.42 also has the shortest barrel length of any pistol at 3.25 inches. It was the only Glock pistol to break the one-inch width mark at just 0.98 inches wide.

Glock's .380 offering is also by far the lightest of the company's pistols. Weighing just 13.76 ounces, it's comparable to lightweight revolvers like the Ruger LCR. The next heavier pistol in the Glock line is the 9mm single-column Glock 43, which weighs 17 ounces unloaded. Despite being loaded with six .380 rounds, the Glock 42 is two ounces lighter than the Glock 43.
